Atemoya Tree ‘Geffner’ (Atemoya hybrid)

Also called Pineapple Sugar Apple, Atemoya ‘Geffner’ is a delicious tropical fruit that’s a cross between Cherimoya and Sugar Apple. It produces large, knobby green fruit with juicy, white inner flesh that can be scooped out and eaten with a spoon. It tastes slightly sweet and tart with a custard- like texture. There are large black seeds inside the fruit. ‘Geffner’ is considered to be self-fertile but hand pollination ensures greater fruit set. It grows to become a tall tree in tropical zones yet in the north, it’s easy to grow as a container plant and can be maintained at 5-6’ tall with pruning. In CT, it blooms in summer with fruit ripening in mid-winter. After fruiting, it has a dormant period when the tree can be deciduous. Atemoya fruit is high in vitamin C and a good source of fiber, potassium and magnesium. Ripe fruit can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three weeks.
